New plug requirements for South Africa

The South African National Regulatory for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) requires all importers and manufacturers of products that fall under relevant compulsory specifications, to obtain a LOA (Letter of Authority).

The relevant compulsory specification for plugs is currently VC 8008 Ed. 3. The compulsory  specification VC 8008 Ed. 3 requires that the plug complies with the standard SANS 164-0:2012 and SANS 164-1, -2, -3, -4 or -5.

Currently the most used South African plug is the 16 A plug according to the standard SANS 164-1:2012 (see left photograph below). However, in 2017 the standard SANS 164-1 will be superseded by the standard SANS 164-2. This means that in 2017 the 16 A plug according to SANS 164-1 must be replaced by the 16 A plugs for class I and class II appliances of SANS 162-2 (see other 2 photographs below).
