New electrical equipment categories for certificate approval in Malaysia

Under Electricity Regulations 1994, it is the responsibility of manufacturers and importers of electrical equipment to obtain the Certificate of Approval before their products can be sold on the Malaysian market. Until now, 31 categories of electrical equipment are required to obtain the Certificate of Approval from the Malaysian Energy Commission.

In order to enhance the increased safety in the market of electrical equipment, the Energy Commission has revised and added three new categories and some types of equipment under existing categories that must obtain the Certificate of Approval (COA).

This is effective from 1 January 2013.

Below are some of new categories:

  • Portable Cable Reel
  • LED Lamp, LED control gear, etc
  • Bottle Warmer, sterilizer
  • Dish Washer
  • Ionic Facial Sauna
  • Audio/Video Recorder up to 4 channels
  • Massager
  • Air-Conditioner (up to 4hp)
  • Electric Toys
  • IT and Office Products
  • Adaptor for IT Equipment (up to 20V)
  • Switching Mode Power Supply
