New regulation for single capped fluorescent lamps in South Africa

Effective from August 1 2011 all single capped fluorescent lamps (CFL's) in South Africa must comply with the compulsory specification VC 9091 as published by government notice no. R 348 and amended by notice R 1229.

The specifications include safety, performance and minimum efficacy requirements. Products must be certified against SANS 60696:2010 and SANS 60968:2006. Application to the local regulator must be accompanied by test reports and certificates confirming compliance with SANS standards and specification VC 9091. The specification requires a type 5 certification which includes surveillance of the production.
