Saudi Arabia: Lamps & motors have been added to Saudi Energy Efficiency Program (SEEP)

In addition to refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines, Saudi Arabia has extended its scope of energy efficiency to include both Lamps and Motor Products.

Saudi standard Number 2870/2015 for “Energy efficiency, functionality and labeling requirements for lighting products - part 1” will be mandatory starting from the 1st of May 2016, while the first implementation stage of Saudi standard Number SASO IEC 60034-30 for “Rotating electrical machines - Part 30: Efficiency classes of single-speed, three-phase, cage-induction motors (IE - code)” has been mandatory since 1st of July 2015.

For lamps:
The Saudi standard covers indirect and direct general light sources having a luminous flux above 60 lumens and below 12,000 lumens according to the following stages:
- First stage: A lamp with a power equal to 60 Watt or above
- Second stage: Cover all lamps below, equal and above 60Watt

Regulated lamps shall have one of the following technologies:

  • Incandescent lamps
  • Compact fluorescent lamps with integrated ballast (CFLi)
  • Halogen lamps
  • Light-emitting diode (LED) lamps (Incandescent retrofit types)
  • Light-emitting diode (LED) lamps (Halogen retrofit types)

The lamps which are not intended for general lighting purposes are excluded.

After the standard becomes mandatory, all relevant lighting products should pass all the tests in an accredited/registered laboratory and then make registration through the SASO system.
