Update of the RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC published

The European Union has recently published an update to the RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC. The commission decision 2010/571/EU and a corrigendum have been published end of September in the official journal L 251/28 and L254/48 respectively.

The update concerns the use of mercury in lighting sources, in particular fluorescent light sources. The initial limits of 5 mg for compact fluorescent lamps will be successively reduced to 2.5 mg per burner by December 2012 for lamps with a power below 30 W, and 3.5 mg for lamps with a power between 30 to 50W by December 2011 respectively.

Changes also concern double capped fluorescent lamps, cold cathode fluorescent lamps, high pressure sodium and mercury lamps, where restriction will apply starting from December 2011. The use lead in dielectric ceramic capacitors for a rated voltage of less than 125 VAC or 250 VAC will be prohibited starting from January 2013. Use of lead in glass or ceramic for other electrical and electronic components is not affected.
